Getting to Montreal via Plattsburgh / Burlington (save $$$)

If you're flying to Montreal from the US, it's much cheaper to fly into Plattsburgh and take a bus ($40 round trip) into downtown Montreal.  At the very least, when checking flights into Montreal, you should always check flights into Plattsburgh as well.  I've seen it $250 cheaper.  Plattsburgh's airport is about a one hour drive away, whereas Montreal's airport is a 30 minute drive.  If you factor in the pains of airport security and customs, Plattsburgh is a much better option.  They don't call it "Montreal's US airport" for nothing.

The bus is with Adirondack Trailways: http://www.trailwaysny.com/html/english … platts.pdf

Edit: I forgot to mention a huge advantage of doing this: you don't need a passport. Proof of residency and proof of citizenship (e.g., a driver's license and a birth certificate) are all you need to cross the border by land.  See the Department of Homeland Security's website.

Yeah, it's a hidden gem if there ever was one.

Btw, you can also take a ~$40 round trip amtrak train from plattsburgh to montreal, but the train station is 3 miles from the airport, so cab + train is getting a bit pricey...

Yikes, I just noticed that the travel time is 3 hours!

The bus is 2 hours travel time--even that's a little long...

Still worth it to look at the price difference.  I'm frugal, and have no problems with a 2-hour bus ride if it means $250 in savings.  Just put Stern on my ipod and wish that the ride was 4 hours wink

Plattsburgh airport even has free parking:  http://borderdeals.ca/2008/07/13/now-bo … t-shuttle/

You're right about getting a limo.  This site quotes $195:

Burlington is also an option.  It's 30 miles further away, but it can be cheaper sometimes.  It all depends on the dates, etc.
Limos from Montreal to Burlington are $275 on that site I linked b4.

In short,
check flights to and from Plattsburgh, Montreal, and Burlington, weigh the costs / PITA / etc, and choose the best.

Edit: This thread might be useful for those considering flying to Burlington and figuring out how to get to Montreal.
